Just for the Money?
What really motivates us at work
Adrian Furnham with Tom Booth
Does money really make the world go round? This book argues that we are far from
rational with respect to our money.
How many people work just for the money? Why is money such a tricky subject? (We
often find it easier to discuss sex!) How are our attitudes to money formed?
And, why, when so much is understood about how to motivate people, do
organizations still have incentive schemes that either have no effect or are
actually demotivating?
These are some of the questions asked by Adrian Furnham and Tom Booth, the
authors of this thought-provoking book. Just for the Money? Challenges our
assumptions about money in the workplace, at home and in our daily lives.
The book is predicated on four fundamental, evidence-based truths: most people
are far from rational with respect to money; our attitudes to beliefs about our
spending and saving of money have much to do with our childhood and early
education; at work, money is a powerful demotivator, rather than a powerful
motivator; and money and well-being are only tangentially related.
Money is a frequent topic of conversation, but also a subject people have
difficulty talking about.
But we can all improve our lives if we take a hard look at the role it plays in
our lives.
Furnham and Booth explore money and motivation at work, money beliefs, money in
society, money and religion, the meaning of money, the importance of money,
money as a motivator or demotivator, money and emotions, and money and family.
Just for the Money? even includes useful tips for helping your children to
understand about money and teaching them to be sensible with it.
Unlike traditional business guides, this fascinating book is one that you must
buy if you are interested in money!
“The demands of today’s workplace mean we have to look again at the link between
money, motivation and madness. A timely insight into the factors that will
retain or repel your future talent.”
Jacqueline Davies, HR Business Partner, HSBC
“Many companies don’t really appreciate the nature of the role played by pay and
incentives in people’s lives. In this book Adrian illuminates the true
challenges facing companies and presents a convincing case for a radically
different approach.”
John Drysdale, Director of Learning and Development, Aon
“Adrian Furnham’s perspective is always fresh and real-world, yet it’s based on
rigorous research. He makes the subject of money and motivation at work very
accessible and fascinating.”

“This book revisits the fundamentals that we know to be true and often neglect.
It takes today’s reward practice back to the question of motivation, insisting
that we define and value the
things that make work enjoyable.”
